School of Scottish Studies Edinburgh

from Community Podcasts and Soundworks by Chris Dooks

/

about

A direct collaboration with The University of Edinburgh's School of Scottish Studies, in partnership with Timespan Heritage Arts Centre, Helmsdale. This work features a very old recording from Hamish Henderson (or one of his fellow ethnographers) of a rare form of East-Coast Sutherland Gaelic, sung in a kitchen. I subsequently scored this work in the town itself, with the school's piano, before presenting it to the daughter of the woman in the recording, who had never heard it, or the other family recordings we uncovered for her.
