about

Oaken Iota is a collaboration between Chris Dooks and Dave Donnelly (Production Unit). Made over a year in and out of Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland - the material was primarily constructed during gaps when both artists' daughters were in and out of intensive care.

What follows is a kind of record in the literal sense, a document of trying to forge something to crack tension and construct personal electronic therapies for the fathers of the girls.

Using portable analogue synths such as the Korg Volca units and sets of headphones, the works were initially small improvisations discretely made in the wee small hours in hospital accommodation.

The horror of having a child in a delicate life or death situation a few hundred feet away affects people in different ways. For Dooks, these synth works were initially born from simple patterns made between 2am and 4am. Having been in the situation before, and constructed his ICU Tracks EP (Broken20) from recollected hospital noises, Donnelly set about making field recordings of the hospital's sound world. Later in the year and with the girls out of intensive care a rally of material was produced via soundcloud. Some of it is angry, some of it is melancholy and some of it is deliberately annoying.

As it happened, the work also serves as a personal record of the final days of Yorkhill hospital which has since been closed and relocated to Govan.
